Most of us are familiar with Dr. Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” which ranks the basic needs all humans have.  After basic physiological needs (food, water, shelter, health)  the most important need for most people according to Maslow is safety.

We may not be able to protect our employees outside of work, but Simon Sinek, who shot to fame with his book “Start with Why”,  offers some important insights on the role of leaders when it comes to how safe their employees feel.  In a 12 minute TED Talk, Sinek shares some great examples from prehistory, the military and business on why (and how) great leaders make people feel safe.
